T

he fucking alarm on Dani’s phone blares loudly in her purse all the way from my living room, jolting us both awake.

She must have set it before she came here.

We're both still naked. Her hair is matted, and she's a gorgeous sight for my happily exhausted eyes.

I know she's leaving. There's no doubt, but it doesn’t feel final.

Something happened yesterday. Something I didn’t see coming, but her just showing up at the funeral without me asking?

Fuck, maybe there's a small glimmer of hope for way, way in the future.

“I have to go.” She walks to the bathroom, flaunting everything she's got and picking up her dress from the floor. It’s clearly still damp because she wrinkles her nose as she feels it.

“You can take one of my shirts. I might be able to find shorts with a drawstring.” I climb out of bed and search through my dresser drawers.

She walks to my closet and grabs a black t-shirt with a whiskey bottle etched on the front. She holds it up. “Really?”

I grab an old pair of shorts and toss them to her. “Free shirt. I do a lot of promotions and events.”

She catches the shorts, tugging them on, then the shirt, cloaking her body in my clothes. “Still. Putting an addict in a whiskey shirt? Classy.”

I laugh and pull on a pair of jeans, lighting a cigarette as I sit back down on my bed, which is now filled with memories of Dani. “Relax, I never even wore it. “

She grumbles as she walks out of the room, silencing the alarm and then coming back to my room. Her purse is slung over her shoulder as she sits on the edge of the bed. “You’re doing good things. And whether you see it or not, you’ve changed.”

I take a long drag of the cigarette, letting the poisonous smoke flow from my lips as I focus on her words. Doing good things. “I’m trying, Dani.”

She stands up from the bed, and I put the cigarette out and rise also, walking toward her. “That’s all anyone expects. Keep it up.”

I smile down at her, taking a second to stay in this moment before she turns and starts walking toward the door.

I follow her down the short hallway and to the door as she waves a good-bye from behind her back. “See ya around, asshole.”

She yanks the door open and walks outside.

“You can count on it, Dani.”

I watch her stride confidently to her car and climb in, just as a shiny, classic car parks next to hers, and I see my brother Luke behind the wheel.

Fucking great. He eyes her as she backs out of my drive, and he climbs out.

He slams the driver’s door shut and then walks up the drive with his usual cocky swagger. “Dani, really?”

“Don't worry about it.”

“Do you want your dick to fall off?”

“Watch it, Luke.”

He reaches me, and I see the concerned, big-brother look all over his face as I look him squarely in the eye.
